Valentine 17 by artist Pat Meyer

Just entered my painting to a competition.  Every time I do this it makes me think will the judges like my painting, is it good enough to get in, did it photograph correctly and so many other factors.  The other night the academy awards were on TV and watching all the people the same fear was in their eyes.  Everyone tries to put on a happy face but you know they are all so nervous to win.  The same thing happens when you put yourself out there for competition.  You hope just to be chosen and put on the wall with all the other great artist.

This last week I just wanted to play around with back ground textures and colors against my composition.  To be able to achieve a nice juicy look to the back grounds meanwhile tying them into the painting themselves.  It may look easy but you have to think out each stroke and color before applying to the canvas.

Recently I painted a small 5 x 7 painting of just the brass vessel and flowers but for some reason I wanted to do a larger version of that painting.  Little more complex.

The nice handicap gentleman that works at our self service car was was giving out carnations for Valentines this year.  He is always at work helping others.  A big thank you to him for the wonderful service he gives.  My sweet hubby gave me the roses for Valentines but I was so moved by his gesture of the carnations I added them to this still life set up.

The name of this painting comes from the name of the beautiful David Austin Roses that were the inspiration.  He named this beautiful yellow rose Poet's Wife Roses.  The blue against the yellow makes for high contract.

Every year my tradition is to paint red roses for Valentine.  One of my friends called them Dreamy so that is how the got their name.  Thank you Valerie!  These Valentine Roses are placed in an antique bowl and seem to be flowing anyway they wanted to go.  All snuggled in together showing each other the Love that Valentine's represents.  May you be blessed with much love in your life.
